James O’Neill

Author

James comes to writing after a successful career in educational leadership and social enterprises spanning over two decades. He has always most valued understanding people and building relationships with those we meet. He tries to bring some of the lessons he has learnt about humans to bear in his work, using the characters and stories that he creates as the backdrop.

His hope is to make us all spend a moment thinking about the way we work and why we are all so spectacularly unique and improbable whilst remembering we are part of the wonderful tapestry of humanity we share with eight billion other inhabitants. Plus hopefully enjoying a rather good story at the same time. He enjoys running and afternoon tea. He is convinced they balance out and is determined to prove it.

Dan Coombes

Artist/Illustrator

Dan grew up in Norfolk, exploring the countryside and creating a deep bond with the natural world which would shape his art and creative impulses. He studied at Norwich University of the Arts before following his twin passions of painting and inspiring the next generation of artists.

A teacher to his core, he is a firm believer that art should be enjoyed by everyone no matter their skills and ability. He takes this belief into his art lessons where he hopes to unlock a love of art in the students he teaches. He loves to travel and explore the world, drawing ideas and inspiration from his journeys and bringing them back to the wilds of Norfolk to be enjoyed by all.

One sunny afternoon James sat down on holiday and thought about a little boy who saved a mouse. Mouse was born and a few hours later the first version of his adventure had taken shape. Intended to be a thoughtful reflection on life from another altogether smaller perspective. James hopes there is something we can all learn from the trials Mouse faces and how it overcomes them.

Although predominantly a painter, Dan loves to explore new creative challenges, so when an opportunity to collaborate with James on The Adventures of Being a Mouse arose the challenge was accepted. After exploring a range of possible techniques and styles, Dan settled on black and white  drawings using water soluble graphite sticks with painted areas of colour for the mouse and its interactions. Ensuring Mouse and its world retained its natural form with the vibrant edge of humanity tinging its experiences.

Lessons from the Life Line

Coming soon, James’ first anthology of poems, stretching five years of creative exploration that had its genesis in Lockdown and has continued to provide him with the opportunity to reflect on life’s many twists and turns.

At the same time he explores the natural world, flipping our perspective on everything from butterflies and brains to the magic of rainbows. James brings a playful touch to the world of science and helps us reimagine the the place we call home.

What would the night sky be without stars after all?
